Hans Christian Cornelius Mortensen

Hans Christian Cornelius Mortensen (* August 27, 1856, † June 7, 1921 ) was a Danish teacher, on the back the current method of bird ringing.

Hans Chr C. Mortensen was born in Jonstrup on Zealand. After graduation in 1874 he first studied theology and then medicine and Science subjects at the University of Copenhagen, but without ever having to complete a course of study. Still, he got a job as a teacher in 1888 at the Latin School in Viborg and here he was - from 1909 as a senior teacher - until his death.

Ornithologist tried to decipher scientific bird migration in the late 19th century. They tried first to consortia to collect all observations on bird migration. This soon proved to be an aberration, which yielded no exact knowledge. Hans Christian Cornelius Mortensen was the first to captured birds in 1899 to create aluminum rings that bore a serial number and provided an address, should be given to the feedback when the bird was found again. After Mortensen actually received reports of recovered birds, this process was very quickly adapted across Europe. First, was also begun on the Ornithological Rossitten on the Curonian Spit in 1900 with the ringing of adult birds and nestlings, already in 1909 a procedure in Great Britain as of the bird observatory was used to Helgoland.

The established method of Mortensen is used to this day, provides valuable insights into the migratory behavior of birds.
