Hans Engell

Hans Engell ( born October 8, 1948) is a Danish journalist and former politician of the Conservative People's Party.

Life

Hans Engell went through a journalism training at Berlingske. In 1978 he became head of the Information and Press Service of the Conservative Party. 1982 to 1987 he was Minister of Defense under Poul Schlüter, since 1984 also a member of the Folketing. 1987 to 1989 he led the conservative faction until he moved again to the Cabinet, this time as Minister of Justice.

After Schlüters resignation in 1993 due to a cover-up scandal Tamil refugees Engell was again faction leader and spokesman for the Conservatives. He distinguished himself further with defense and security issues. In 1995, Engell also the party presidency by Torben computing Dorff. Engell was attributed to the party's right wing, but understood it emphasizes basic conservative views with a pragmatic flexibility to connect. He repeatedly concluded compromise with the social democratic government under Poul Nyrup Rasmussen. Engell 1997 had to resign as party leader after he caused a traffic accident under the influence of alcohol.
