Hans Erich Slany

Hans Erich Slany ( born October 26, 1926 in Bohemian Wiesenthal, Czechoslovakia, † September 22, 2013 in Esslingen am Neckar ) was a German designer and university lecturer.

He was next to Dieter Rams and Hans Gugelot a prominent representative of industrial design in the Federal Republic. He founded and headed the design studio Slany Design, was a professor of industrial design and a founding member of the Association of German Industrial Designers Association ( VDID ).

Life

Slany was drafted into the army and was taken prisoner. After the war he returned to Esslingen and obtained in 1948 a degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Esslingen. Then he took a job as a product developer and assistant to the technical direction of the company Ritter Aluminium GmbH in Esslingen.

Later he worked for two years for the styling department of Daimler AG in Sindelfingen. There, he worked on the gullwing Mercedes -Benz 300SL. He also developed with Henry Löffelhardt the design of the Zeiss Ikonette compact camera, one of the first cameras with plastic housing. Then he turned to Robert Bosch GmbH with ideas for power tools in plastic housings. Based on these ideas and proposals were the Robert Bosch GmbH, the book " The impact of ergonomics to the design of power tools " out " make work easier: Ergonomics for power tools " as a reference for their engineers and as a publication for the traveling exhibition.

Slany founded the degree program Industrial Design at the State Academy of Fine Arts in Stuttgart, who was the first course of its kind in Germany. The Sudeten German Academy of Sciences and Arts appointed him in 1989 as a full member of the class of Arts and Sciences.

Slany it was important to live with the company culture of teamwork and to develop projects in close cooperation. He said: "Previously worked Designer often isolated and only with artistic design criteria, influenced by different cultural beliefs. Industrial designer now works systematically. In 1956 Hans Erich Slany founded the design studio Slany Design. He retired in 1996 from the company, now called TEAMS Design.

Association of German Industrial Designers

Slany founded with the designers Arno Votteler, Karl Dittert, Hans Theo Baumann, Herbert Hirche, Günter Kupetz, Rainer Schütze and Peter Raacke the Association of German Industrial Designers Association Baumann was until 1970 the first President of the Association. They wanted to create an interest group in order to adequately represent the profession of designer in public, members to advise on legal matters and, more generally, to promote both exchanges such as education. Slany contributed significantly to lead the VDID in the Council of Societies of Industrial Design (ICSID ). The VDID now works closely with the Association of German fashion designer ( VDMD ) under the umbrella of the German Designer Association ( DDV).
