Hans Fries (painter)

Hans Fries ( * 1460 in Fribourg, † 1523 in Bern ) was a Swiss painter before the Reformation.

Life

He was the son of a baker. His first received Malversuch the age of thirteen dates from the year 1478: In the begun by Peter Freiburger of Molsheim Freiburger Chronicle of the Burgundian Wars, he made some initials and a full-screen; then he broke his illustration work from in the Chronicle.

End of the 1470s learned Fries at Bernese painter Heinrich Bichler. 1482 he returned to Freiburg back, worked at the Chronicle of Molsheim on and was busy with other smaller works. He then went on tour; first to Basel, where he seemed to have operated as a draftsman of woodcuts. After a crisis in the Basel printer trade was said to have come over southern Germany, to South Tyrol.

After his return to Freiburg, he was in 1501 appointed painter to the town; later he became a councilor. During this period he created many altars. Around 1510 he moved to Bern, where he was called in 1523 for the last time.
