Hans Georg Bock

Hans Georg Bock ( born May 9, 1948 in Bottrop ) is a German professor of mathematics and computer science. Since 2005 he is Managing Director of the Interdisciplinary Center for Scientific Computing of the Ruprecht -Karls- University of Heidelberg, where he was deputy director from 1993 to 2004. Bock is a member of the committee for developing countries of the European Mathematical Society ( EMS - CDC ) and is there a responsible member for the Asia region.

Life

Bock studied mathematics with minors in physics and biology at the University of Cologne. He graduated in 1975 with the thesis " Numerical optimization of parameter-dependent state- limited processes with linearly occurring control using the multiple shooting method " under the supervision of Professor Roland Bulirsch from.

From 1976 to 1981 he was a research associate at the University of Bonn and worked until 1982 at DLR in Oberpfaffenhofen thereafter.

After several years working as a mathematical consultant in industry and research, he returned from 1985 to 1987 as a researcher at the University of Bonn back. With the work " boundary value problem methods for parameter identification in systems of nonlinear differential equations ," which he produced with Jens Frehse and Roland Bulirsch, 1986 he received a doctorate of mathematics and science faculty.

This was followed from 1987 to 1988 Visiting Professor of Numerical Mathematics at the Ruprecht -Karls- University of Heidelberg before Bock took a call on a C3 professorship at the University of Augsburg in 1988. Since 1991 he is the owner of the C4 - chair of computer science and optimization software at the University of Heidelberg.

Since 2005 he is Managing Director of the Interdisciplinary Center for Scientific Computing of the Ruprecht -Karls- University of Heidelberg, where he was deputy director from 1993 to 2004.

Research

Bock is the author or coauthor of more than 180 scientific papers. These include, in particular progress in the areas

Teaching

Under the supervision of Hans Georg Bock, more than 70 theses and 30 PhD theses have been completed so far. 13 of his students have been accepted professorships at German and foreign universities.

Bock has since 1992, as Speaker of various graduate colleges of the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft and since November 2007 as Director of the set up in the framework of the Excellence Initiative Heidelberg Graduate School of Mathematical and Computational Methods for the Sciences (HGS MathComp ) by numerous innovations, such as the mentoring system to a structured internationally networked, interdisciplinary doctoral training earned done.
