Hans Georg Wunderlich

Hans Georg Wunderlich ( born January 19, 1928 in Stuttgart, † May 28, 1974 in Stuttgart ) was a German geologist.

Life and work

Wunderlich studied geology in Bonn and Göttingen. In 1952 he was in Göttingen doctorate ( Contributions to the geology of the northern edge of resin in the Bad Harzburg ) and 1957 he completed his habilitation in Göttingen. In 1963 he became a professor in Göttingen in 1970 professor of geology and paleontology in Stuttgart.

He dealt with Geotektonik and mountain building ( orogeny ), where he was a supporter of the flow theory. He was from 1969 Main Coordinator for the Priority Programme Geodynamics of the Mediterranean area by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft.

Work on the archeology of Crete

In his geological studies in Crete, he became aware of the Palace of Knossos. He disagreed with the established theory of Sir Arthur Evans, after which the Minoan culture had been extremely peaceful, and instead points to evidence a pronounced cult of the dead, similar to the simultaneous Egyptian culture of the Old Kingdom.

In the band Where the bull Europe contributed (1972 ) analyze the kretominoischen excavations from the perspective of Geology and found several inconsistencies in Evans theories; For example, the devices referred to as bathtubs for bathing are wholly inappropriate, since their casing consists of a water-soluble material, and no drainage was present. The light wells he considers ventilation shafts.

Also, it is unlikely that the exception, located on high ground " palaces " and " villas " were permanently inhabited, since there is no water supply is ensured; the fountains found it deems not deep enough and they therefore interpreted as cisterns. Wunderlich therefore assumes that the population lived in the plains and the so-called villas and palaces temples were dead.

Wunderlich's criticism called a long-standing scientific controversy out, but is now regarded as an outsider opinion and is believed to be largely disproved.
