Hans Gude

Hans Fredrik Gude ( born March 13, 1825 Oslo, † August 17, 1903 in Berlin) was a Norwegian landscape and marine painter.

Life

Hans Frederik Gude studied from 1838 to 1841 at the Royal Drawing School in Oslo in Johan Flintoe. He continued his training in 1841 continued in Dusseldorf with Andreas Achenbach. In 1842 he entered the Düsseldorf Academy, where he studied until 1844 when Johann Wilhelm Schirmer. The subsequent training, until 1846, was in his private studio. According to a study trip to Norway with the painter Adolph Tidemand he spent the years 1848 to 1850 back in Oslo. Back in Dusseldorf awarded him in 1852 the Berlin Academy with a gold medal.

In 1854 he succeeded his teacher Johann Wilhelm Schirmer as a professor of landscape painting at the Düsseldorf Academy. The position had become by the appointment Schirmer Director of the newly established School of Art in Karlsruhe by the Baden Prince Regent and later Grand Duke Friedrich I. free. In 1861 he gave up the professorship and spent the years 1862-1864 in Betws -y -Coed in Wales.

After the death of Johann Wilhelm Schirmer in 1863 again Gude was appointed in 1864 as his successor for the management of the Karlsruhe Academy. He took that function until 1870, after which he taught from 1874 to 1880 as a professor of landscape painting at the same academy. 1880 appointed him his friend and former pupil Anton von Werner at the Berlin Academy of the director of the master class of landscape painting. So Hans Fredrik Gude moved to Berlin and bought the queen -Augusta -Str. 51 a house for himself and his son, the sculptor Otto Lessing. This Gude's eldest daughter had married Sigrid on September 21, 1875, and ran a thriving studio for decorative architectural sculpture. Until 1901 Gude led his class and was appointed to the Senate of the Academy of Arts. He died on August 17, 1903 in Berlin. His grave is in the cemetery Vår Frelsers Gravlund in Oslo.
