Hans-Joachim Hoppe

Hans -Joachim Hoppe ( born September 22, 1945 in Hilden near Dusseldorf ) is a German political scientist, journalist and expert on Eastern Europe.

Studies and PhD

He finished high school at the prestigious Helmholtz -Gymnasium Hilden. His study of history, Slavic studies and political science, he joined in 1977 with a thesis on the " German - Bulgarian relations in World War II " from. The work is based on the files of the German Foreign Office in Bonn / Berlin and the Military Archive in Freiburg, and was released in 1979 in the studies of the Institute of Contemporary History in Munich. The dissertation was awarded a prize of the Southeast Europe Association Munich and the University of Cologne.

Career

After completing his PhD at Günther Stökl, one of the leading Eastern European historian, was Hoppe lecturer at the Department of East European History at the University of Cologne. From 1976 to 2010 he was Head of Department of German, Slavic and East Asian Languages ​​at the People's University in Cologne in the main profession.

Besides his work, he published numerous articles in the magazines " Eastern Europe " and "South East Europe ", in edited by Gerhard Wettig magazine " Foreign Policy. German Foreign Affairs " and in the reports of the Federal Institute for East European and International Studies, Cologne (now SWP Berlin). Currently, he observed the current developments in Russia, Eastern Europe, Central Asia and the Caucasus. He also deals with issues of multiculturalism, particularly the Ukrainian diaspora, the example of the U.S. and Canada.

In September 1997, during the final phase of the Serbian President Slobodan Milošević Hoppe was used as an OSCE election observer in Serbia.

Hoppe is a member of the Federation of East European historians, the Southeast Europe Association Munich and the German -Canadian society. He is a freelance employee of the Eurasian magazine.
