Hans-Joachim Rotzsch

Hans -Joachim Rotzsch ( born April 25, 1929 in Leipzig, † September 25, 2013 ) was a German tenor, choir director and university teacher. From 1972 to 1991 he was choirmaster.

Life

Rotzsch attended from 1940 to 1945, the Frankfurt School in arts, artistic director Kurt Thomas was. After an apprenticeship he began in 1949 a study of church music at the Leipzig Academy of Music, one of his organ teacher was here Günther Ramin.

Rotzsch was first known as an oratorio tenor, was a member of the Leipzig Bach Soloists and jumped on a concert tour of the Leipzig Thomanerchores in Basel in 1954 in the short term as a tenor soloist. From then on he became a regular on the St. Thomas Boys Choir and soon took over the vocal training. In 1963 he became head of the Leipzig University Choir, which he led until 1973. In 1972 he followed Erhard Mauersberger according to the post of choirmaster. A few weeks earlier the title of professor, he was awarded. From 1974 to 1979 Rotzsch was Leipziger CDU city councilor.

From the office of Thomas cantor Rotzsch came back in 1991, in order to forestall his dismissal by the city of Leipzig for his IM activity for the Ministry of State Security since 1973. His resignation was of numerous protests Leipzig citizens, active and former St. Thomas as well as the parents of Thomas Choir accompanied who fought vehemently for him. He was succeeded by Georg Christoph Biller.

Rotzsch in 1990 founded the Leipzig Cultural Foundation. In October 1992 Rotzsch was appointed Full Visiting Professor of Protestant church music at the Mozarteum in Salzburg, where he worked until 2000.
