Hans Keller

Hans Keller (fully Hans Heinrich Keller, born March 11, 1919 in Vienna, † November 6, 1985 in London) was an influential, born in Austria, British musician, musicologist and radio presenter.

Life

Keller was born into a wealthy Jewish family in Vienna. The family also had close contacts to the cultural and artistic scene of the city. Keller was first taught by Oskar Adler, who was also Arnold Schoenberg's teacher. In 1938 he was forced after the Anschluss of Austria to escape with the help of his British brother-in to London. In 1940 he was interned on the Isle of Man. From 1943, he studied violin and viola at the Royal Academy of Music. First, Keller worked as a violinist, but soon found his niche and became an important and influential music critic. From 1959 he worked as an editor in the III. Program of the BBC and also had contacts with the NDR. Keller was regarded as an international authority in the field of the string quartet. As a musicologist, he is by his method of "functional analysis " known geworden.Seine scripts ( for radio broadcasts and musicological publications) are stored in the Cambridge University Library.
