Hans Leu the Elder

Hans Leu the Elder ( * 1460, † 1507 in Zurich ) was a Zurich painter.

Life

Hans Leu was probably born in Baden. After the early death of his father he came to Zurich in 1488, his mother's birthplace. Basel and Constance are suspected as the stages of his apprenticeship and journeyman years. In 1489 he is mentioned in the building accounts of the cathedral and in 1492 first mentioned as a citizen of the city. In the following years he painted for the woman Minster Abbey, and in 1504 he received from the city commissioned to decorate the fairground at the town festival. Leu died in 1507 at the age of about 45 years. After his death, first led his wife Anna Frick, his son Hans Leu the Younger continued the workshop.

Works

Leus most famous work are the five panels that he painted for the " Twelve Apostles Chapel " of the cathedral ( altar of the patron saints of Zurich " Zurich Conterfey The City "). They were rescued in Iconoclasm and now preserved in the Swiss National Museum.

Between 1497 and 1501, the burial place of the city's martyrs Felix and Regula was redesigned in Grossmünsterplatz, and Leu was awarded the contract to the " tafelen ad martyres » painting showing Felix, Regula, Exuperantius and their martyrdom. After the Reformation, the panels were trimmed to 1566 in the lower part and supplemented by partial repainting the whole city panorama. 1936-37 the Saints were partially exposed. In the background, the panels show topographically accurate views of the city of Zurich and its surroundings.
