Hans Lietzmann

Hans Lietzmann ( born March 2, 1875 in Dusseldorf, † June 25, 1942 in Locarno ) was a German Protestant theologian and church historian.

Life

Lietzmann studied theology and classical philology at Jena and Bonn at Hermann Usener, Franz Bücheler, the theologian Eduard Grafe and the archaeologist George Loeschke. In Bonn he was in 1896 the theological examination candidates, 1898, the senior teacher exam and qualified in 1900 for church history. Lietzmann in 1905 professor of church history at Jena, 1923, he was the successor to Adolf von Harnack at Berlin's Friedrich- Wilhelms-Universität. The Royal Prussian Academy of Sciences elected him a member in 1927. In Berlin, he was also from 1926 to 1942 Ephorus the Protestant Theological Seminary Johanneum. Hans Lietzmann was also a member of the Berlin Wednesday Society. Scientific travels took him into the manuscript libraries of Vienna, Basel, Zurich, Venice, Milan, Genoa, Florence, Rome, St. Petersburg and Moscow.

Lietzmann joined the New Testament, churches and liturgical history research with classical philology, Christian archeology, and comparative religious studies and was editor of numerous theological standard works. Inter alia He co-founded and until 1942 the real lexicon for Antiquity and Christianity co-editor.

During the first world war he engaged in work for the Red Cross. He married in 1919 and had three children, including the FAZ journalist Sabina Lietzmann. His only son fell in 1941 to the east.

His last resting place in the cemetery Lietzmann Wilmersdorf in Berlin.

In memory of Hans Lietzmann a public Hans Lietzmann lecture organized by the Berlin- Brandenburg Academy of Sciences a year as part of the research project Greek Christian writer.
