Hans Lufft

Hans Lufft, also: John Lufft, Hans air, Hanns Lufft, John Lufft etc. (* 1495 in Amberg, † September 2, 1584 in Wittenberg) was a book printer in the Reformation period, called the "Bible printer ".

Life

His birth year is 1495 and he should have been born in Amberg. The printing trade he learned in Leipzig and entered service in 1515 followed as a journeyman in the first printing press in Wittenberg of Green Mountain, which had existed since 1508 and, subsequently, Melchior Lotter the Younger

After he had married in 1519 his wife Dorothea († 1561), Lufft published in 1524 his first print " From purchase, trade and usury ." 1524 Lufft received the print Lottners and took with it the pressure of the editions of the Bible and works of Martin Luther and other personalities of Wittenberg during the Reformation period. As a publisher, it came up to his bankruptcy in 1533 to the goldsmith Christian Döring. Lufft printed in 1534, the first complete edition of the Luther Bible, which was relocated in multiple editions. With 100,000 printed Bibles and a plethora of various other works which he also published, he prospered.

Thus he was able in 1526 to acquire the citizenship of Wittenberg. In 1528 he bought the copper street 10 and in the mayor road between scraping and Wall Street (now Arsenal Square). Wittenberg in two houses and enlarged by turning on and extensions its possession This in turn yielded the corresponding recognition of his person in the town of Wittenberg.

On September 8, 1562 Hans Lufft married a second time, Margaret Muschwitz († May 22, 1582 ), a daughter of Matthias Moschwitz from Torgau. On September 2, 1584 Hans Lufft has died at the age of 89 years in Wittenberg. It is known that the daughter Sara († January 5, 1570 ) was married to Johann Köllitzsch.
