Hans Marchand

Hans Marchand ( born October 1, 1907 in Krefeld, † December 13, 1978 in Genoa ) was a German linguist.

He studied Romance languages ​​, English and Latin, and was a high school teacher in Istanbul ( with his teacher Leo Spitzer ), Yale, Bard and from 1957 to 1973 at the Eberhard Karls University of Tübingen. He has published work on linguistic phenomena in various languages ​​including English, French, Turkish and Italian. However, he became known for his work for the word education in the English language. Marchand founded in the 1960s, the linguistic Tübingen school and influenced a number of linguists such as Leonhard Lipka, which continue to be considered representative of his theories.
