Hans Rev

Hans Rev ( Hans Reff, * about 1489 in Denmark, † July / August 1545 in Oslo ) was a Norwegian clergyman. He was the last Roman Catholic bishop in the diocese of Oslo before the Reformation, and later became the first Lutheran superintendent ( bishop) of the diocese of Oslo Lutheran Church in Norway.

Life

About Revs background and education, little is known except that he was of Danish origin, and among other in Paris, where he earned his master's degree in Roman and Canon Law. He worked as a secretary Erik Valkendorf, the ( probably already on his election as Archbishop ) took him to Nidaros (Trondheim ). There was Rev ( probably 1515) Member of the cathedral chapter and contributed in 1520 is responsible for the pressure of the Breviary and Missal Nidrosiense Nidrosiense, the first printed for Norway liturgical books. 1525 Rev has been appointed with the support of Archbishop Olav and Engelbrektsson of King Frederick I. Bishop of Oslo.

As a member of the Imperial Council with more political than occupied with spiritual matters, he supported in 1531 King Christian II in an attempt to recapture of Norway, suggested but then again on the side of Frederick I. After his death in 1533, he also supported his son Christian III. in the Civil War, despite his sympathies for the Lutheran Reformation. Nevertheless, he was, along with the other Catholic bishops of Denmark and Norway, declared by the king in August 1536 deposed. Archbishop Engelbrektsson took him prisoner, but had in 1537 again release him. On November 1, 1537 Rev waived in a letter to the King on his episcopal dignity and the rights attaching thereto.

Since it was not possible to find a competent successor Lutheran, first introduced in 1537 as a Lutheran led the superintendent for the diocese mountains Geble Pedersson the Reformation in the Diocese of Oslo. Rev stopped spending time in Denmark. In the fall of 1541 he was employed as a superintendent for his old diocese again, that was connected to the Hamar Diocese. ( Only in the 17th century took the superintendent in Denmark and Norway again the Bishop title. ) Through visitations and synods priest he now promoted the enforcement of Lutheran doctrine.
