Hans Rottenhammer

John Rottenhammer the Elder ( * 1564 in Munich, † August 14, 1625 in Augsburg ) was a German draftsman and painter of the Mannerist and early Baroque. His painted on copper cabinet paintings hang in many important galleries of Europe.

Life

Rottenhammer was born in 1564 as son of courtiers in Munich. In 1582 he began a six-year apprenticeship with the court painter Hans Donauer the Elder, to then go to Italy. 1589 there is a trace in Treviso, on the popular route to Venice, where he settled in 1591 and recorded by the paintings by famous Venetian master. 1594 drove Rottenhammer to Rome to perfect himself in Federico Zuccari at the Accademia di San Luca in the drawing. In Rome he met the Flemings Paul Bril and Jan Brueghel the Elder know, both established landscape painters, whom a competent figure painter for their small scale landscapes found in Rottenhammer on copper. It did the collaboration with the two artists, which lasted in Rome far beyond their time together. Despite its success Rottenhammer 1595 returned to Venice, to establish themselves there with his own workshop for small-format painting on copper. A year later he married the Venetian di Elisabetta Fabris. Rottenhammer was at the zenith of his creative and worked with Palma il Giovane, Hendrik van Balen and Adam Elsheimer. His precious little collectibles were highly sought after on the rapidly expanding art market in 1600. From 1600 onwards he used contacts at the Prague court, especially to Emperor Rudolf II, who acquired the banquet of the gods for the imperial collections among others. Client from beyond the Alps had Rottenhammer already supplies from Venice, as Count Ernst von Holstein - Schaumburg, he later also visited Castle Biickeburg and Anton sent messengers to him in teaching. Increasing number of orders from the north may have Rottenhammer persuaded to settle in Augsburg in 1606. Here he adopted soon by the Cabinet painting on copper and instead created major formats, including altarpieces and frescoes. His name secured him commissions from such prominent clients as the Fugger family or Duke Maximilian of Bavaria. Rottenhammer Augsburger time, however, was also marked by the personal decline. Excessive alcohol consumption increasingly impaired his work, which at times came to a complete standstill. Rottenhammer died penniless on August 14, 1625 in Augsburg.

Work

Rottenhammer was in his time a highly esteemed artist whose paintings were in demand throughout Europe. Even today testifies to the presence of his pictures in the great museums of the world of St. Petersburg via Amsterdam and London to Los Angeles of the importance of the artist. His collaboration with the Dutch Paul Bril and Jan Brueghel the Elder around 1595 in Rome marked the beginning of the painted on copper cabinet picture in Europe. Rottenhammer influence as a figure painter is also read off the work of his employee Hendrik van Balen and his student Adam Elsheimer. In his second work half in Augsburg Rottenhammer painted large altarpieces for Munich and Augsburg churches as well as designs for reliefs and sculptures. In the Munich Residence featured many of his frescoes.

Rottenhammer most famous work depicting the wedding of Neptune with Amphitrite, a work commissioned by Rudolf II was, it is now on display in the Hermitage (Saint Petersburg ).

Meanwhile, an interpretation of the bible scene of Jesus and the adulteress to him is also attributed to Theodor Fontane was the inspiration for his story L' Adultera. Previously it had been thought the painting came from Jacopo Tintoretto.
