Hans Sandreuter

Hans sand Reuter ( born May 11, 1850 in Basel, † June 1, 1901 in Riehen ) was a Swiss artist Symbolism and Fin -de-siècle.

Life and work

After attending grammar school in Basel Hans sand Reuter began in 1867 an apprenticeship as a lithographer. Subsequently, he was briefly in Nuremberg and Verona act as such, studied for six months at Achille Carrillo 1872 and returned back to Basel. In 1873 he attended a private art school in Munich and made the acquaintance of Arnold Böcklin, who allowed him through intercession with Wilhelm von Kaulbach access to the evening life drawing at the Munich Academy. In 1874, he traveled to Florence to Böcklin and when he fell ill a year later, Böcklin received him into his house. From 1877 to 1880 lived sand Reuter in Paris, in 1882 he moved to Florence, and two years later he moved into a studio in Basel. He has received numerous commissions for murals and sgraffito in or on public buildings. He restored and decorated as well as rooms of the monastery in Stein am Rhein. In 1896 he became a member of the Swiss Federal Art Commission. In 1897, he traveled to Florence to draw Böcklin Arnold Böcklin for the proposed medal, and opened on 19 September, organized by him Böcklin exhibition at the Kunsthalle Basel. 1899 ill sand Reuter from diabetes and died two years later in his "Zur Mohr heap" in Riehen.

Sand Reuter Böcklin was closest disciple; some critics accused him during his lifetime to be a Böcklin - imitators. He was a representative of the fin-de- siècle art and was primarily known in Switzerland as an artist. For the hundredth anniversary of his death, the Kunstmuseum Basel 2001/2002 a major exhibition organized overall. Sand Reuters oeuvre shows a great variety. Apart from oil and watercolor paintings he created monumental decorative art. He designed graphic prints and stained glass and furniture. Sand Reuter was a " dedicated, well critical traveling companion, even partisans of the young artists of his generation". Some he designed facades and wall decorations are still present today, for example, the facade of the "bear profession " and the murals of the " blacksmith's guild " in Altbasel.
