Hans-Ulrich Obrist

Hans Ulrich Obrist ( * 1968 in Weinfelden, Switzerland ) is a Swiss curator of contemporary art.

Life and work

According to the studies of economics and politics Colonel turned to contemporary art. So he organized exhibitions in the Nietzsche House in Sils Maria or the Museum of Urban Drainage in Zurich. He has curated among other things exhibitions at the Musée d' Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris, the Kunsthalle Wien, the Deichtorhallen in Hamburg and at New York's PS1. In 2005, he was with Daniel Birnbaum and Gunnar B. Kvaran curator of Uncertain States of America, one of the CCS Bard Hessel Museum, Annandale -on-Hudson (USA) outgoing traveling exhibition with intermediate stations at the Astrup Fearnley Museum of Modern Art, at Bard College in New York, at the Serpentine Gallery in London and at the Reykjavik Art Museum.

Obrist is the founder of the Museum Robert Walser and a member of the Board of Trustees of the Allianz Cultural Foundation. He is co- director of the Serpentine Gallery in London, and author of several works of art literature.

Obrist is engaged in "Interview Project", an extensive collection of interviews between Obrist and artists, architects, filmmakers, scientists, philosophers and musicians. The interviews have been published in part in the magazine Artforum or in book form. Longer interviews were launched in the Conversation Series, several of these books with interviews with John Baldessari, Zaha Hadid, Dominique Gonzalez- Foerster, Yoko Ono, Robert Crumb and Rem Koolhaas have already appeared.

For the years 2010 and 2011, Obrist is seen by the specialist magazine Art Review on the second place of the list of 100 most influential people in the art industry, in 2009, he was the most influential person.

Since October 2012 Obrist is a founding member of the Academy of Arts of the World in Cologne.
