Hans-Ulrich Schmied

Hans -Ulrich Smith ( born February 23, 1947 in Meissen ) is a former rower from the GDR. In 1974 he became world champion in the double sculls.

Hans -Ulrich Schmied had begun as breaststroke and after joining the rowing he was temporarily active both in the skull and in the belt rowing. After he had finally decided on the Skull boats, he won in 1968 in the GDR championships in One. At the Olympic Games in 1968, he joined together with Manfred Haake at the double sculls and finished fifth. Together with Joachim Bohemian occupied blacksmith at the World Rowing Championships in 1970 to second place. Two years later, the two received the bronze medal at the 1972 Olympics in Munich. After Smith had grown with Bohemian 1970 and 1971 DDR - master, he could errudern 1973 and 1974 the title with Christof Kreuziger. Kreuziger and Smith won in 1973 at the European Championships and 1974 World Championships. At the 1976 Olympic Games blacksmith came with Jürgen Bertow and again received the bronze medal. 1977 won blacksmith along with Rüdiger Reiche his fifth DDR title in double sculls. At the World Championships in 1977, the two received the silver medal. Smith rowed during his career for the SC Berlin- Grunau. 1971, 1974 and 1976, he was awarded the Patriotic Order of Merit in bronze.

Smith had taken a course of study as a civil engineer by training as a concrete worker. As a graduate engineer, he worked as a researcher at the State Secretariat for Physical Culture and Sports operates. After the turn, he moved into a Berlin architects.
