Hans von Bartels

Hans von Bartels ( born December 25, 1856 in Hamburg, † October 5, 1913 in Munich) was a German painter.

Life

He was born in Hamburg, the son of Dr NFF von Bartels, a Russian government official. He studied first under the marine painter Rudolph Hardorff (1816-1907) in Hamburg, then under Adolph Schweitzer in Dusseldorf and Carl Oesterley. After he has done extensive traveling, among other things to Italy, he settled with his wife, writer Wanda Bartels, 1885 in Munich and in 1891 was appointed professor of painting. He was an honorary member of leading English, German, Dutch, Belgian and Austrian art societies.

Bartels was one of the leading German water -color painter, his oil paintings were praised for their energy. Thematically, it dealt mainly with the sea and scenes of fishing life.

His daughter Wera von Bartels ( - Heimburg ) ( 1886-1922 ) was also illustrator and modeller.
