Hans von Gersdorff

Hans von Gersdorff, called Schyl -Hans, (* 1455, † 1529 in Strasbourg ) was a German surgeon, who probably came from the unterelsässischen Görsdorf.

Work

Hans von Gersdorff published in 1517 in Strasbourg, the " Field Book of Wundarzney " which is illustrated with woodcuts, which are attributed to Hans Wechtlin, illustrated. The book is based in part on the Chirurgia Magna of the medieval physician Guy de Chauliac. Gersdorff book was widely read and was for many years the most important foundation of surgery in Europe. Especially because of his remarks to the amputation of limbs, it has a high level of awareness. Gersdorff has it carried out at least 200 such amputations themselves.

The field book contains four anatomical woodcuts, including a representation of a bloodletting, in which the internal organs are shown. The other images show one, with many then usual weapons wounded man, a skeleton and a further illustration of the internal organs. More pictures of the book show surgical procedures such as amputations, dental drills, the reducing bone and leprosy. Almost nothing is known about the illustrator, Johann Ulrich ( " Hans " ) Wechtlin (also called Wächtlin ) known, who lived from about 1480 to 1526.
