Hans-Wilhelm Koepcke

Hans -Wilhelm Koepcke ( born June 13, 1914 the district of Pomerania, Pomerania, † November 21, 2000 in Hamburg ) was a German zoologist, ornithologist, herpetologist and professor.

Life

Koepcke studied Natural Sciences at the Christian -Albrechts -University of Kiel. In 1947, he was there his doctorate with a dissertation about the drawing patterns of some Idotea species. He went to Peru in 1949, where he initially the Universidad Nacional Mayor de San Marcos in Lima worked at the Museo de Historia Natural. In 1950 he married the ornithologist Maria Koepcke, nee von Mikulicz - Radecki, whom he had met while studying in Kiel and who had followed him to Peru. In 1954, the daughter Juliane Koepcke, married Diller, was born. Maria and Hans -Wilhelm Koepcke worked closely together and published together, with Maria Koepcke on ornithology and her husband specializing in the fauna of Peru. Their joint publications belonged Las Aves de importancia Económica del Perú, issued 1963-1971 by the Peruvian Ministry of Agriculture. 1957 Habilitation Koepcke with Scripture synecological studies on the west side of the Peruvian Andes. In 1968 Maria and Hans -Wilhelm Koepcke the Río Llullapichis the research station " Panguana ", named after a native bird species. Between 1959 and 1962 Koepcke contributions to Neotropical Fauna issued in Jena with Erich Titschack. His wife died on December 24, 1971 in the crash of LANSA Flight 508, the daughter Juliane was the only survivor of the crash with 91 casualties. His main work is the two-volume The writing life forms. Foundations of a universally valid biological theory, which appeared in 1973 and 1974. 1974 Koepcke returned back to Germany. He worked at the Zoological Museum of the University of Hamburg and taught zoology. He was also from 1974 to 1981 curator of the herpetological collection. Koepcke died 2000. His daughter took over the management of the research station " Panguana ".
