Hansa-Brandenburg W.20

The Hansa -Brandenburg W.20 was a flying boat of the German Navy in World War I, which should be carried in a submarine.

Description

The aircraft was designed by Ernst Heinkel. For accommodation in a submarine, the aircraft had to be small and can be dismantled. In addition, the assembly and disassembly in a short time must be accomplished. According to the work of the aircraft could be mounted in 3 3/ 4 minutes and be dismantled within 1 3/4.

The W.20 was a biplane with a slender fuselage. It had a conventional braced tail. The engine, which was mounted on struts between the wings, drove a pusher propeller. The pilot sat in front of the wings in an open cockpit. Due to the narrow hull, which offered little stability in the water, supporting swimmers were placed under the tips of the lower wing. Only three copies were built, as the U- boat type that you should take the aircraft was not built.
