Hanscarl Leuner

Hans Carl Leuner ( born January 8, 1919 in Bautzen, † June 22, 1996 in Göttingen ) was a German psychiatrist and psychotherapist.

He is the founder of Katathym - imaginative psychotherapy, and is also considered a pioneer in the scientific research and psychotherapeutic use of psychoactive substances (so-called Psycholytic psychotherapy).

Life

Soon after graduating from high school Leuner expressed interest in the profession of psychotherapist and studied from 1939 to 1946 - interrupted by military service - Medicine in Frankfurt / Main, Würzburg and Marburg. After graduation he made a training analysis with the young pupil Gustav Schmaltz in Frankfurt and worked from 1947 in the Psychiatric Clinic in Marburg.

At the request of Professor Klaus Conrad in 1959, he moved from Marburg to Göttingen and habilitated there with an already completed in Marburg Minutes of model psychoses. In the same year he began to build its own area " Psychosomatics and Psychotherapy " within the Psychiatric Hospital Göttingen. In 1975 it became a separate " Department of Psychosomatics and Psychotherapy ," the Leuner headed until his retirement in 1985.

Until the last year of life active, Hans Carl He suffered a heart attack in February 1996 and died after a short period of improvement a few months later.

Services

Stimulated by reading primarily on Ernst Kretschmer's works - - By the late 40s in Marburg Leuner began the therapeutic effect of imagination on his patients to try and investigate. In 1954, he described this process in the first publications under the term " Guided Affective Imagery ", today known and widely used as Katathym - imaginative psychotherapy.

Around the mid-50s he also began to additionally use various hallucinogens to support the imaginative psychotherapy. The controlled medical use of psychoactive and psychedelic substances for depression psychotherapeutic processes has been known under the name Psycholytic psychotherapy.

1960 Leuner initiated the " First European Symposium for the Psychotherapy under LSD 25 " at the University of Gottingen. In 1964 he founded the " European Society for Medical psycholytic therapy" (EPT ). At the background of increasing public and political condemnation of not medically controlled Drogenge and abuse in the late 60s, however, more and more doctors withdrew from this research, and the EPT was dissolved after their fifth Symposium 1971.

1974 on Leuner initiative " the Consortium on Guided Affective Imagery and imaginative process in psychotherapy " ( AGKB ) launched.

In 1985 Leuner founded together with other researchers, the " European College for the Study of Consciousness " ( ECBS ) and took over the presidency. Since its inception, the ECBS has conducted several symposia on specific topics and organized three conferences under the title " worlds of consciousness." The second congress in 1996 in Heidelberg has been initiated Wittner itself.
