Hanviller

Hanviller ( German Hanweiler ) is a commune with 236 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2011 ) in the north- east of the department of Moselle in the Lorraine region.

Geography

Hanviller is located in the extreme northeast of Lorraine, a few kilometers south of the border Palatinate, northeast of Bitche. It is the first place in the course of the horn creek, which originates on the military training area Bitche, which lies south of the community.

History

Hanviller was mentioned as Hanwylr the first time in 1493. It belonged to the Counts of Zweibrücken- Bitsch and there to the office Schorbach until the end of the 16th century. Friedrich the Elder of Zweibrücken- Bitsch built in Hanviller before 1436, the Château de Gentersberg from which a ruin northeast of the community generated.

Since 1766 Hanviller belongs to France, since 1790 the canton of Bitche.

In 1850 the city had about 500 inhabitants.

At the beginning of the Second World War, the inhabitants of the border village were evacuated in the Charente.
