Haparanda Municipality

Haparanda is a municipality in the northern Swedish province of Norrbotten County and the historic province of Norrbotten.

Geography

The municipality extends from the Finnish border some 30 kilometers along the Gulf of Bothnia to the west and by the coast about 40 kilometers into the interior. The Torne älv forms the municipal boundary to the east (Finland). Parallel to the Torne River Keräsjoki flows through the municipal area.

The main town of the municipality is Haparanda. Other places are Karungi, Kukkola, Marie Lund, Mattila, Nikkala, Purra, Salmi, Island Seskarö, Säivis, Vojakkala, Vuono.

Economy

Aside from public administration facilities include industrial enterprises AssiDomän AB and AB Polarica to the larger employers. The cross-border trade is also of great importance to the community.
