History

In the summer of 1941 has Eric Fry, an employee of the Canadian Department of Mines and Resources, on behalf of the Royal Canadian Air Force, a large area on the Goose River chosen on a new air base was to be built. Shortly after the decision was clear, the air base was built within five months. The Goose Bay Air Base was an important base where the aircraft during World War II appealed for a stopover to refuel.

The first settlers came from the coastal regions of Labrador. They were recruited by the McNamara Construction Company and built the Air Base. For these settlers a city was founded, which is about 8 km from the Air Base was located. The town was originally called Refugee Cove and was renamed in 1955 in Happy Valley.
