Harald Hein

Harald Hein ( born April 19, 1950 in Tauberbischofsheim, † May 20, 2008 ) was a German fencer who belonged to the foil and the epee world class.

The 1.70 meters tall for a fencer rather small athletes belonged to the first generation of world class fencers from Tauberbischofsheim. In 1969 he was Junior Vice World Champion with the sword, and in 1970 he became Junior World Champion with the foil. In the World Fencing Championships 1973, he won gold with the epee team and has been with the foil - team second. In 1974 he suffered a serious training accident when a weapon he was stung up in the lungs, but was shortly thereafter again on the piste.

1976 Harald Hein was at the Olympic Games in Montreal Olympic champion with the foil team. In 1977, he was second with the foil - team world champion and individual. In 1978 he was awarded the third in the individual foil, 1979, he won the team bronze. 1983 Harald Hein was the third time with the team world champion, a year later at the 1984 Olympics, he won the team silver. In the World Fencing Championships 1985, he won the individual bronze and team silver. Harald Hein was in 1969, 1970, 1971, 1976 and 1979 German single master with the foil.

After his career as a world class fencer Hein coached top fencers such as the Olympic champion Anja Fichtel. Since 1994 he was the owner of the transport company HMT in Tauberbischofsheim. After a long illness, he died on 20 May 2008 of a brain tumor.
