Life and work

After graduation in 1960 followed the study of church music at the Musikhochschule Hamburg. In 1966, Vogel put the A- exam as a cantor and organist. In this time first organ concerts were abroad. From 1967 to 1969, he came to terms with life and work of Arp Schnitger. Vogel was involved in the final version of Gustav Fock Schnitger monograph and one of the initiators of the Schnitger Conference 1969 in Groningen. He founded in 1972 the North German Organ Academy, in the stone house Bunderhee continued trained organists from around the world from 1978 to 2002 and to date in conjunction with the University of the Arts Bremen offers international master classes. In 1983 the East Frisian Indigenat he was awarded by the East Frisian landscape.

A major concern is him teaching the old way of playing on historic organs. His concept to bring to the original instruments from the Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque periods, the respective organ literature in the relevant and performance practice and style of play (historical fingerings, agogics, registration) to represent, had as multipliers effect. His own technique is influenced by the clavichord, with greater awareness of the pressure point of the Orgeltraktur is achieved by a natural weight technique of arms.

Bird is the initiator and leader of the Dollard festival, which was held from 1981 to 2003 as a biennial cross-border with the Netherlands. In 1997 he founded the Organeum in Weener, which today Winfried Dahlke projects as artistic director. Since 1994 Professor Vogel is at the Academy of Arts Bremen.

As an organ expert and country church music warden of the Evangelical Reformed Church (1983-2006), he has advised on numerous restoration projects. During his tenure, many historic organs in the organ landscape Ostfriesland were perfectly restored. According to his plans several new organs were carried out, including for the Stanford Memorial Church, St. Paul Tokyo, Gothenburg Örgryte nya kyrka and collars.

Harald Vogel performs internationally. He has held teaching positions at various institutions, including since 1976 a professor of organ at Westminster Choir College in Princeton (New Jersey). Worldwide, he has influenced organist in your play and provides an awareness of the value of historic organs in public. Bird has redeveloped the Redeuntes compositions from the Buxheimer Organ Book ( 1460 ) by the interaction of bell and organ. His recording of Bach works on the Pedalclavichord is a first.

By Harald Vogel ownership of numerous publications, including the new critical edition of the Tabulatura nova ( 1624) by S. Scheidt and Toccatas and choral arrangements by JP Sweelinck, the first publication of the 24 Capricetten in all keys by JW Lustig, the facsimile of the Organ School The self informirende pianist ( 1767) by Michael Johann Friedrich re castle as well as basic picture books to the historic organs in Lower Saxony. His recordings of historic organs in northwestern Germany for Radio Bremen (1962-1976) is documentary meaningful. Among the numerous shots on recordings with organ works from the Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque periods is particularly the recording of the complete organ works of Dieterich Buxtehude on 17 historic organs highlight (7 CDs).

2008 Vogel received in Sweden, the honorary doctorate from the Technical University of Luleå and 2012 the German music award Echo Klassik in the category of Instrumentalist of the Year (organ) with his album JP Sweelinck: Organ Works Volume 1 published by MDG.
