Harden M. McConnell

Harden Marsden McConnell ( born July 18, 1927 in Richmond, Virginia) is an American chemist.

McConnell graduated from the George Washington University ( Bachelor's degree 1947) and in 1951 received his doctorate at Caltech. He was then a professor at Stanford University (Robert Eckles Swain Professor ).

He served in the 1950s and 1960s, important contributions to the study of the electronic structure of compounds from their NMR and other spectra. He recognized, for example, the importance of the hyperfine interaction in aromatic free radicals for the determination of the electronic structure of unsaturated hydrocarbon compounds. From him, the spin -label technique originated in the EPR spectroscopy, which has been widely used in biochemistry.

In 1982 he was awarded the Dickson Prize in Science, 1983/84 the Wolf Prize in Chemistry, 1989, the National Medal of Science, 1990 Peter Debye Award, in 1971 the Langmuir Prize and the 2002 Welch Award. In 1965 he became a member of the National Academy of Sciences and in 1982 the American Association for the Advancement of Science. In 1991 he became an honorary doctorate from the University of Chicago.
