Hardin County (Illinois)

The Hardin County is a county located in the U.S. state of Illinois. In 2010, the County had 4320 inhabitants and a population density of 9.4 inhabitants per square kilometer. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Elizabethtown.

Geography

The County is located in southern Illinois on the Ohio River, which forms the border with Kentucky in the east and south. It has an area of 470 square kilometers, of which eight square kilometers of water surface. At the Hardin County borders the following Nachbarcountys:

History

The Hardin County was formed on March 1, 1839, from parts of the Pope County and Gallatin County. It was named for John Hardin (1753-1792), an officer of the Continental Army during the American Revolutionary War.

The first county seat was in McFarlan 's Ferry, which was later renamed in Elizabethtown, according to McFarlan 's wife Elizabeth. He was also the first to have a brick building built in 1812, overlooking the Ohio River, as well as the Rose Hotel, which has been extensively restored in 1998 and today is the oldest hotel in Illinois.
