Hardin County (Iowa)

The Hardin County is a county located in the U.S. state of Iowa. In the census in 2010, the County had 17,534 inhabitants and a population density of 11.9 inhabitants per square kilometer. Administrative office ( County Seat) is Eldora.

Geography

The County is located just northeast of the geographical center of Iowa and is drained by the Iowa River. It has an area of 1,476 square kilometers, of which two square kilometers of water surfaces. At the Hardin County borders the following counties:

History

The Hardin County was formed in 1851. It was named after Colonel John J. Hardin, who fell in the Mexican-American War.

In its history, the County had three courthouse. The first was a small wooden building, which burned down in the 1850s. The second courthouse was a two-story building and stood on the site of present-day office of the County Sheriff. The third and still in use today courthouse was built in 1892 and handed over to its on September 19, 1893; it was included in the National Register of Historic Places in 1981.
