Hari Rud in Herat

The Hari Rud ( Dari: هریرود ), ( f1griechisch also Ochos ( in antiquity ) ), is a 1124 km long river in Afghanistan and Turkmenistan.

It rises in the center of Afghanistan in the Koh -e Baba and flows westward past the 2280 m high capital Chaghcharan the Afghan province of Ghor and more on Minaret of Jam. In the province of Harat he is dammed by the Salma Dam, is to provide a power of 42 MW hydropower plant, whose 2009. It then flows south past Herat. The local river valley is known for its high fertility and high population density. He later forms the Iranian border with Afghanistan and Turkmenistan. About 5 km before the confluence of the Hari Rud the Kashaf Rud is dammed by the Doosti Dam. The hydroelectric power plant (16 MW) has been operated since October 2005 jointly by Iran and Turkmenistan. The dam is to be used for irrigation of the surrounding level and for the water supply of Mashhad. The Hari Rud by flows on the border town Serakhs / Sarakhs, crossing the Karakum Canal in Turkmenistan and ends behind the oasis city Tejen in a 60 km wide oasis in the Karakum desert.

Rud in Persian means as much as "river".
