Harker Heights is a city in Bell County in the U.S. state of Texas in the United States.

Geography

The city is located just southeast of the geographical center of Texas, on U.S. Highway 190 in the west of the county and has a total area of 33.0 km ² without significant water surface.

History

Named the place was one of the two landowners who presented the land for the site to be available to Harley core.

Demographic data

According to the census of 2000, there were 17,308 people in 6,200 households and 4,712 families. The population density was 523.7 inhabitants per km ². The racial the population was composed of 70.89 % White, 14.94 % African American, 0.78 % Native American, 3.58 % Asian, 0.40 % Pacific Islander residents from the and 5.79 % from other ethnic groups. Approximately 3.62% were of mixed descent, and 12.44 % of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

Of the 6,200 households, 42.8 % had children under the age of 18 living with them. 61.4 % were married couples living together. 11.2% were single mothers and 24.0 % were non-families. 18.0 % of all households were single-person households and 3.5% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.77 and the average family size amounted to 3.13.

30.4% of the population were under 18 years old, 10.5 % from 18 to 24, 34.8 % 25-44, 18.0% from 45 to 64, and 6.2% who were 65 years or older. The average age was 30 years. For every 100 females of all ages were 101.0 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, 99.0 males.

The median income for a household was $ 42,947, and the median income for a family $ 49,607. Males had a median income of $ 31,728 versus $ 26,404 for females. The per capita income was $ 20,061. 10.0 % of the population and 7.4 % of families are below the poverty line. Of which 12.2 % have children under the age of 18 and 4.9 % of those 65 or older.
