Geographical location

Harkerode located on the eastern edge of the Harz about 9 km northwest of Hettstedt.

History

Harkerode was first mentioned in a document of King Otto I of 13 September 936 as Harrikesrothe. On October 22, 973 the mention followed as Kerlingorod.

From the late 17th century to the early 19th century was in place an important coaching inn on the post and trade route between the Hanseatic cities of Halle (Saale ) and Hamburg, from which in 1817 the inn Green Tutu emerged.

The formerly independent village was incorporated on 1 July 1950 in the neighboring community Sylda. On April 1, 1990, he was separated from Sylda and was connect almost twenty years back independently. On 1 January 2010 the municipalities Harkerode, Alterode, Bräunrode, Pommern, Quenstedt, Stangerode, Sylda, Ulzigerode and Welbsleben and the city Sandersleben (Anhalt) merged to form the new town Arnstein. The administrative community Wipper - A, one of the Harkerode, was dissolved.
