Harlan County (Nebraska)
Harlan County is a county located in the state of Nebraska in the United States. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Alma, which after the daughter of NP Cook was named, an early settler in the area.
Geography
The County is located in southern Nebraska, adjacent to Kansas and has an area of 1487 square kilometers, of which 55 square kilometers are water surface. It borders in Nebraska clockwise to the following counties: Phelps County, Kearney County, Franklin County and Furnas County.
History
Harlan County was formed in 1871. It was named after a nephew of U.S. Senator James Harlan.

According to the census in 2000 lived in Harlan County 3,786 people in 1,597 households and 1,049 families. The population density was 3 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was made up of 98.86 percent White, 0.13 percent African American, 0.11 percent Native American, 0.08 percent Asian, 0.03 percent of residents from the Pacific Islander, and 0.16 percent from other races groups; 0.63 percent were descended from two or more races. 0.77 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Of the 1,597 households out of which 25.7 percent have children under the age of 18 living with them. 59.0 percent were married couples living together, 4.3 percent were single mothers, 34.3 percent were non-families, 30.8 percent of all households and 16.7 percent lived in people aged 65 years or older. The average household size was 2.34 and the average family size was 2.93.
Based on the county the population was spread from 24.2 percent population under 18 years, 5.0 percent between 18 and 24 years, 21.6 percent between 25 and 44 years, 26.2 percent between 45 and 64 years and 23.0 percent were 65 years old or older. The average age was 44 years. For every 100 females there were 98.0 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 96.8 men statistically.
The median income for a household was $ 30,679, and the median income for a family was $ 36,875. Males had a median income of $ 27,580, women $ 18,411. The per capita income was $ 15,618. 7.0 percent of families and 10.1 percent of the population lived below the poverty line. Of these, 14.4 percent were children or adolescents under age 18 and 9.1 percent of those 65 years.
