Harold Bride

Harold Sydney Bride ( born January 11, 1890 in Nunhead, London, England; † April 29, 1956 in Glasgow, Scotland ) was a Marconi radio operator. He became known as the second radio officer of the passenger ship RMS Titanic, which sank on 15 April 1912.

Early life

Harold Bride was born as the son of Arthur and Mary Ann Lowe Bride. As Bride was a little older, his family moved to Bromley. After school, the young Bride decided to become a radio operator. He helped with the family business to pay for the training can. In 1911 he completed his apprenticeship as at the Marconi Company. As an apprentice, he then served on various ships, for example on the LaFance, of Anselm, the Beaver Ford, Haverford and the Lusitania.

Titanic

1912 Bride of Marconi of the Lusitania was transferred to the new White Star liner Titanic. He could serve on this luxurious ship after only one year of teaching, and with only 22 years. Together with his colleague Jack Phillips he shared the radio service on the ship. They changed regularly from: Bride worked from 2:00 bis 8:00 clock clock and 14:00 clock bis 20:00 clock, Phillips took over the rest of the time.

On 14 April 1912, the Titanic was at least eight ice warnings. As the radio operator, however, were usually preoccupied with the send holiday greetings, from the passengers, did not reach all the news the bridge. After the ship had collided with the iceberg at 23:40 clock, they were instructed shortly after midnight Captain Smith to send a distress signal. From then on both radio operators working in the radio room and talked for an active radio communications with other ships. In the beginning, Phillips radioed the CQD signal, then the (new ) SOS signal after Bride had pointed out to him that this was perhaps their last chance.

2:00 clock, 20 minutes before the sinking of the Titanic, Captain Smith appeared again to deliver the men of their duties. As the water penetrated into the radio room, they left these together and delivered to the keel up floating half folding boat B. While Bride with some effort was able to get a dry spot, Phillips remained in the ice cold water and did not survive the disaster. Bride, who had suffered at the feet during the night injury and frostbite, finally reached in the early hours of the morning aboard the RMS Carpathia, hurrying to the rescue, with the radio operator had previously been in contact.

Later life

Bride testified as a witness at the subsequent studies on the disaster, and then took his first job as a radio operator again. In 1920 he married Lucy Johnstone Downie, with whom he 's three children Lucy ( b. 1921 ), John (* 1924) and Jeanette (* 1929) got. Bride later moved with his family to Scotland, where he died in 1956 from lung cancer.

In the Titanic film version of 1997, the role of bride with Craig Kelly was occupied.
