Harold J. Powers

Harold Jay Powers ( born October 8, 1900 in Eagleville, Modoc County, California, † 16 October 1996 in Cedarville, California ) was an American politician. Between 1953 and 1959 he was Deputy Governor of the State of California.

Career

Harold Powers attended the common schools and then studied at the University of California Agriculture College in Davis, now the University of California at Davis. Later he worked in agriculture and especially in the field of animal husbandry. He was the owner of several ranches in California, Nevada and Idaho. Politically, he was a member of the Republican Party. Between 1934 and 1953 he sat in the Senate of California, whose president he was Pro Tempore since 1947. In the years 1948 and 1952, he participated as a delegate to the Republican National Conventions relevant. In the presidential election of 1956 he was one of the Republican electors, officially chose President Dwight D. Eisenhower in his second term.

1953 Governor Earl Warren of President Eisenhower was appointed Chief Justice. Then, the current Vice Governor Goodwin Knight was his successor in the office of the governor. In the now vacant position of Vice Governor Harold Powers moved by. After a re-election, he held this post between 1953 and 1959. In 1962, he first wanted to run for governor. Since he had the impression that the Republican Party leadership wanted to support the future President Richard Nixon, but he withdrew his candidacy. He joined an opposition within the Republican Party, which did not have as governor of California Nixon. Powers became the leader of this group, then the Democrat Pat Brown, who was governor of California since 1959, successfully supported, and his reelection allowed.

Then Harold Powers continued his agricultural activities. He died on 16 October 1996, a week after his 96th birthday, in Cedarville.
