Harold Mahony

Harold Segerson Mahony ( born February 13, 1867 in Edinburgh, † June 27, 1905 at Dromore Castle, County Kerry) was an Irish tennis player and Wimbledon champion in 1896.

Life

Mahony came in 1867 as the only son of John Mahony barristers to the world. John Mahony was the sixth largest landowners of Ireland, among others, were his Dalmore Lodge in Leith, a suburb of Edinburgh, and Dromore Castle in County Kerry.

Harold Mahony, an excellent tennis player, took off in 1890 at the Wimbledon Championships in part. After he was in 1893 advanced to the finals of the All- Comers Competition, he won at the Wimbledon Championships in 1896 his only title by last year's winner Wilfred Baddeley defeated in the Challenge Round. The following year, he was beaten Reginald Doherty in the Challenge Round. Mahony 1898 won the international German Tennis Championships by defeating in the final Joshua Pim. At the Olympic Games in Paris in 1900 he won second place in the individual and as well as in mixed with the Frenchwoman Hélène Prévost.

Mahony had with a height of 1.91 m, a wide range and, unlike most of the other players, a better return than forehand. He died at the age of 38 on June 27, 1905 at the family estate Dromore Castle from the consequences of a bicycle accident.
