Harold T. Johnson

Harold Terry Johnson ( born December 2, 1907 in Broderick, Yolo County, California, † March 16, 1988 in Roseville, California ) was an American politician. Between 1959 and 1981 he represented the state of California in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Career

Harold Johnson attended the public schools of his home and then studied at the University of Nevada in Reno. Later he headed the firm Pacific Fruit Express Co. He was also district president of the union Brotherhood of Railway Clerks. At the same time he began a political career as a member of the Democratic Party. He held in his home some local offices. Between 1941 and 1949 he was mayor of Roseville. From 1945 to 1949 he also led the American River Development League, an organization that dealt with the expansion of the rivers. Between 1949 and 1959 he was a member of the Senate of California. In the years 1956, 1960 and 1964 he was a delegate to the Democratic National Conventions relevant.

In the congressional elections of 1958, Johnson was in the second electoral district of California in the U.S. House of Representatives in Washington, DC chosen, where he became the successor of Clair Engle on January 3, 1959. After ten re- election he was able to complete in Congress until 3 January 1983 eleven legislative periods. Since 1975 he represented there as a successor to Donald H. Clausen the first district of his state. During his time in Congress were, among others, the Vietnam War and the Watergate scandal and the final phase of the civil rights movement. From 1977 to 1981 Johnson was Chairman of the Transport Committee. In 1980 he was not re-elected.

After retiring from Congress withdrew Harold Johnson from politics. He died on 16 March 1988 in Roseville.
