Harper County (Kansas)
Harper County is a county located in the state of Kansas in the United States. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Anthony. The county is one of the Dry counties, which means that the sale of alcohol is restricted or prohibited.
Geography
The County is located in southern Kansas, Oklahoma and is adjacent to an area of 2080 square kilometers, of which four square kilometers of water surface. It borders in Kansas clockwise to the following counties: Kingman County, Sumner County and Barber County.
History
Harper County was formed on 26 February 1867. It was named after Marion Harper, an officer in the American Civil War.

According to the census in 2000 lived in Harper County 6536 people in 2773 households and 1807 families in Harper County. The population density was 3 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was made up of 97.23 percent White, 0.23 percent African American, 0.83 percent Native American, 0.14 percent Asian, 0.02 percent of residents from the Pacific Islander and 0.38 percent from other races groups; 1.18 percent were descended from two or more races. 1.07 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Of the 2773 households out of which 27.7 percent of children under 18 who lived with them. 55.3 percent were married couples living together, 6.9 percent were single mothers and 34.8 percent were non-families. 32.1 percent of all households were single-person households and 17.9 percent living alone who is 65 years or older. The average household size was 2.30 and the average family size was 2.90 persons.
24.7 percent of the population were under 18 years old. 6.6 percent between 18 and 24 years 22.0 percent between 25 and 44, 23.5 percent between 45 and 64 years, and 23.2 percent were 65 years of age or older. The average age was 43 years. For every 100 females there were 93.7 males. For every 100 adult women 18 years and older 91.4 males.
The median income for a household was $ 29,776, and the median income for a family was $ 39,866. Males had a median income of $ 27,869, women $ 20,000. The per capita income was $ 16,368. 8.5 percent of families and 11.6 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
