Harris B. McDowell, Jr.

Brown Harris McDowell Jr. ( * February 10, 1906 in Middletown, Delaware, † November 1, 1988 ) was an American politician. Between 1955 and 1957, and from 1959 to 1967, he represented the State of Delaware in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Career

Harris McDowell attended the public schools in Middletown, the Wilmington High School, some schools and the YMCA - Beacom Business College in Wilmington. He then worked in agriculture, the insurance industry and the property market. Between 1937 and 1940 he was a member of the Committee on Agriculture of the State of Delaware.

Between 1940 and 1942, McDowell was Democrat member of the House of Representatives from Delaware; 1942 to 1946 he was a member of the State Senate. Between 1941 and 1948 he was also director of intergovernmental co-operation of the milk producers and the competent in Delaware Agricultural Authority ( Farm Bureau ). Subsequently, he was from 1949 to 1953 as executive secretary of state official of the State Government of Delaware. Between 1944 and 1960 he was a delegate to all Democratic National Conventions.

1954 McDowell was mixed with 55 % of the vote against Lillian Martin in the U.S. House of Representatives in Washington DC chosen, where he was Republican Herbert B. Warburton replaced on January 3, 1955. Since he was defeated in the elections of 1956, Harry G. Haskell, he was initially able to do only one term in Congress until January 3, 1957. Two years later he won in a close election with 700 votes ahead of Haskell his mandate. As he also passed the following three congressional elections victorious, McDowell could remain between January 1959 and January 3, 1967 3 four related legislative sessions in Congress. McDowell supported President Lyndon B. Johnson and supported the Vietnam War. This has contributed to his electoral defeat in congressional elections in 1966, when he lost 44% to 56 % against Republican William V. Roth.

In 1968 he joined again against Roth and lost with 41% against 59 % of the vote even more clearly than two years earlier. Between 1967 and 1968, McDowell worked as a Federal State Coordinator ( Federal Coordinator ) for Delaware. Then he withdrew into retirement. He died in November 1988.
