Harrisburg is a city and county seat of Saline County in the south of the U.S. state of Illinois. In 2000, Harrisburg had 9,860 inhabitants.
Geography
Harrisburg is located 176 km southeast of the city of St. Louis, 35 km west of the city of Marion, 72 km south-east of the city of Mt Vernon and 91 miles south-west Evansville in the metropolitan area and is the county seat of Saline County.

History
The town was founded in 1853 as a village and in 1859 the county seat; 1889 Harrisburg became a town. From the beginning, here coal was mined and processed, but only after the American Civil War, this was an important industry for the county and industrial coal production increasingly attracted workers to Harrisburg. Until today, the coal industry is one of the largest employers in the city.
A tornado destroyed on February 29, 2012 large parts of the city.
