Harry Barron

Harry Barron ( born August 11, 1847 in Denmark Hill, Surrey, England; † March 27, 1921 in Weybridge, England ) was a British major general and governor of the colonies of Tasmania and Western Australia.

Life

The son of Charles Barron and his wife Elizabeth attended the Royal Military Academy at Woolwich. In 1867 he was promoted to captain in the artillery. After a steady career in 1904 he reached the rank of Major General and was responsible for artillery units in the Thames region and later in Malta. In 1877 he married Clara Emily, with whom he had a daughter.

From 1909 to 1913 Barron was Governor of Tasmania. Although he was relatively inexperienced in political matters, he had a largely sovereign tenure. Immediately after his time in Tasmania, he was appointed Governor of Western Australia and remained so until 1917.

Barron finally returned to England and sat in Weybridge to rest. There he died on 27 March 1921.
