Harry Hughes

Harry Roe Hughes ( born November 13, 1926 in Easton, Talbot County, Maryland ) is a former American politician (Democratic Party). He was from 1979 to 1987 Governor of the State of Maryland.

Early years and political rise

Hughes first attended the primary school in Caroline County and then the Mercersburg Academy in Pennsylvania. During World War II he served in the Air Corps of the U.S. Navy. After the war he continued his studies until 1949 continued at the University of Maryland. After a subsequent law studies at the George Washington University, he was admitted in 1952 as a lawyer. He then began to practice in his new profession in Denton.

Between 1955 and 1959, Hughes took the Caroline County in the House of Representatives from Maryland and from 1959 to 1970 he was a member of the Senate of Maryland. He was leader of the Democratic Senators and Chairman of the Finance Committee. After that, he was from 1971 to 1977 Minister of Transport ( Secretary of the Maryland Department of Transportation). Since 1972, he was chairman of a conference of all the ministers of transport of U.S. states. In 1977 he resigned after a dispute over the subway construction in Baltimore from this office. During the following two years he was a lawyer in Baltimore.

Governor of Maryland

In 1978 Hughes was elected governor of his state. He took office on January 17, 1979, was for a re-election in 1982 until January 21, 1987 remain in office. During this time he sat down, inter alia, for the interests of the Chesapeake Bay. At that time, a law was passed that would protect this area from pollution and excessive hunting or fishing. After the end of his governorship Hughes worked as a lawyer again. From 1995 to 2003 he was curator of the Chesapeake Bay Trust Company. He was also from 1996 to 2000 on the board of supervisory authority of the universities in Maryland ( University System of Maryland). Hughes was a member of several other organizations. In 2006 he published his autobiography. With his wife Patricia Donoho he has two children.
