Harry Mark Petrakis

Harry Mark Petrakis ( born June 5, 1923 in St. Louis, Missouri) is an American writer of Greek origin, who reached particularly for his novel Lion at My Heart notoriety.

Life

Born the son of a Greek Orthodox priest Haralampos Mark Petrakis grew up in the Greek- dominated suburbs of Chicago and recorded his local childhood and youth experiences in his later novels and autobiographical works. He began by attending school in 1940 to study at the University of Illinois, but was there in 1941 expelled again.

His literary debut was in 1959 with the novel Lion at My Heart, which also became his most successful work and in 1961 in German translation appeared under the title The heart of the lion. In the following years he wrote several other novels such as

  • The Odyssey of Kostas Volakis (1963 )
  • A Dream of Kings (1966, German title Matsoukas the Greek, 1968)
  • The Hour of the Bell (1976, German title The Silent Bell, 1977)
  • Nick the Greek (1979 )
  • Days of Vengeance (1983 )
  • Ghost of the Sun (1990 )
  • Twilight of the Ice (2003)
  • The Orchards Of Ithaca ( 2004).

In addition, he also wrote two volumes of his memoirs, and indeed for a position Mark: A Family Recollection (1970), on the other Tales of the Heart: Dreams and Memories of a Lifetime (1998). In addition to a biography of Motorola founder Paul Galvin, entitled The Founder's Touch: The Life of Paul Galvin of Motorola ( 1991) recently published a collection of his short stories under the title Collected Stories (2006).
