Harry Ord

Sir Harry St. George Ord ( born June 17, 1819 in London, England; † August 20, 1885 in Bad Homburg, Germany ) was a British Major General, colonial administrator and governor of the colonies of the Straits Settlements, the Bermuda Islands and Western Australia.

Life

Ord was born in 1819 as son of Gunner Harry Gough Ord and his wife Louisa in London's North Cray. After studying at the Military Academy Woolwich in 1837, he joined the pioneer corps of the British Army ( Royal Engineers ) and served in Ireland, West Africa, India and the West Indies. In 1846 he married Julia Graham, the daughter of Admiral James Carpenter. From 1855 on, he joined the colonial service and was initially used as a special commissioner on the Gold Coast, then from 1857 as Deputy Governor of Dominica. Then Ord was from 1861-64 Governor of Bermuda, and from 1867, the first appointed by the Colonial Office Governor of the Straits Settlements. During this time he tried to promote the trade of the colony by modern steam ships that could reach Europe much faster via the Suez Canal was opened in 1869.

After his return to England in 1873 he was suffering from a tropical disease. In April 1877, he refused the post from the Governor of South Australia. However, he accepted in January 1878, the office as Governor of Western Australia. During his tenure, he brought forward the construction of railways in the colony, but what the budget of the colony loaded.

1880 Ord left Australia and settled in Bury St Edmunds. In 1885 he died of a heart attack during a stay in Bad Homburg.
