Harry Siddons Mowbray

Henry Siddons Mowbray (* August 5, 1858 in Alexandria, Egypt; † January 13, 1928 in Washington, DC) was an American painter.

Mowbray was the son of a British colonial officials in Alexandria to the world. After he had early lost his parents, an uncle took him to his North Adams, Mass.. In the U.S., Mowbray attended the Military Academy at West Point for about a year.

During this time, Mowbray noted that a military career did not come to him in question and left the army. He went to Paris and became a pupil of Léon Bonnat. Mowbray then moved to the studio of Jean -Léon Gérôme.

After some successes at exhibitions Mowbray went to Rome to study the ancient masters there. Due to his success entrusted to Mowbray 1903-1904 with the management of the American Academy in Rome.

Later Mowbray went back to the United States and settled as a freelance artist in Washington, DC down. Since 1891 was Mowbray member of the National Academy of Design in New York, NY.
