Hartwig Derenbourg

Hartwig Derenbourg ( born June 17, 1844 in Paris, † April 12, 1908 ) was a French Orientalist of Jewish descent.

Hartwig Derenbourg was the son of German - French Orientalist Joseph Derenbourg and Delphine Meyer. After studying in Paris, Leipzig and Göttingen, he was awarded the doctorate for his award-winning magazine " De pluralium linguae arabicae et aethiopicae origine et indole " (Göttingen 1867), from 1867 to 1870 he worked at the catalog of the Arabic manuscripts (Les manuscrits arabes de l ' Escurial ) of the Bibliothèque nationale de France, and taught from 1875 at the École spéciale Arabic des langues orientales. In 1879 he was appointed professor there. In 1884 he became professor of Arabic at the École pratique des hautes études, 1885 for Islamic religions.

In February 1897, he was awarded the Legion of Honour. In June 1900 he became a member of the Académie des Inscriptions et Belles Lettres.
