Harvey Cox

Harvey Gallagher Cox Jr. ( born March 19, 1929 in Malvern, Pennsylvania ) is a Baptist professor of theology at Harvard University. He works on the Ecumenical theology and liberation theology and the role of Christianity in Latin America.

Life

Cox attended the University of Pennsylvania and received a Bachelors degree in 1951 cum laude in history. He has studied at the universities of Yale and Harvard, where he in 1963 received his doctorate of philosophy. In 1957 he was pastor of a Baptist church and began at the same time as assistant professor at the Andover Newton Theological School in Massachusetts. In 1965, Cox teaching at Harvard Divinity School on the theological faculty of Harvard University, and became a full professor in 1969.

Cox reached in 1965 with his book city without God? ( The Secular City ) more than one million copies sold. This main thesis of the book was that God in secular contexts is no less present than in the institutionalized churches. Christian faith communities should behave progressive, even revolutionary. His writings set the tone, especially for liberal groupings of English theology in the 1960s.

On 14 June 2011 the Theological Faculty of the Humboldt University awarded an honorary doctorate at Berlin Cox.
